Multi-function printers aka All-in-one printers can do a lot of home as well as office works for sure including printing, scanning, copying and faxing. For the same reason, it is a bit more difficult to choose the right one for your need than choosing an individual printer or scanner. There are several additional features too and you will have to choose the right set for your need.
For example, some MFPs have duplex while some don’t, some have ADF, wireless and NFC but some don’t. You cannot only rely on these features too. The right balance between print quality, scan quality and ease of use also must be taken into account.
Here we list the important features and aspects to consider when buying a Multi-function printer and we also list the best ones from thousands of products to make your pick even easier.
Factors to consider when buying All-In-One Printer
Types of MFPs
- Inkjet Printers
For Home Purposes: Photo printing quality must be excellent for a home MFP as you may need to print lot of them. Inkjet printers have more clarity and quality than laser printers for the same price. Also, the running cost (cartridges) of inkjet printers is less than that of laser printers. For high-quality laser printers, you may need to spend more money initially. In short, color printing on a budget is far better with inkjet than laser.
- Laser Printers
For office purposes: If you need to print a lot of texts black and white regularly, you may as well choose a monochrome laser printer for the job. Make sure that the printer includes ADF, duplexer, copier, email etc.
Print Quality and Scan Quality
Print quality must be excellent for home and office alike. Scan quality is pretty standard 24- bit for every low-cost MFPs. Do not expect professional photo quality on it.
Size
MFPs are bigger than standalone printer or scanner. So calculate your available space before buying.
Automatic Document Feeder and Duplex
Both of these facilities save a lot of time and effort. A duplex can scan both sides at once while ADF automatically feeds a set of sheets into the machine.
Connectivity
Check out how you can connect the printer to your devices. Wireless, USB, Ethernet, NFC etc.
Print speed and Ease of use
Like everything else, the printer must be easy to use with easy navigation and sufficient options. Also, the print speed measures how much you are going to like the machine. Obviously, faster the better.
Price
Last but not least, calculate a budget; check out if the above features come under it and voila! You are ready to buy the MFP.
We have narrowed down the thousands of MFPs to ten considering all the features and qualities an MFP should have we hope it will make your search a lot easier.

Design and Features
As already quoted, it is 35 percent smaller than MX922 because of its redesign at various attributes like small engine, circuit boards, power supply, improved paper patch etc. It measures 7.5 by 17.3 by 13.8 inches (HWD) and weighs 17.5 pounds, i.e., 8 pounds lighter than its predecessor. TR8520’s trays are closed. TR8520 comes up with a 20 sheet ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) which is slightly smaller. The weight is similar to Epson Expression Premium XP-640 Small-in-one which has no ADF.
When it comes to paper handling TR8520 can hold up to 200 sheets beneath the control panel and 200 sheets upright tray at the back of the chassis. 20 sheets of premium photo paper can be fed in the rear tray. The peers both Canon TS9020 and TS8020 comes up with the same 100/100 two tray configuration and Epson XP0640 has 100 sheet paper drawer with 20 sheet photo paper tray and HP 7855 has 125 sheet paper drawer with 15 sheet photo paper tray.
While taking the deployment of ink TR8520 deploys the same five inks as Canon MX922. You will get a pigment black ink that darkens text and back areas in photo in addition to the standard four die based process color inks – cyan, magenta, yellow and black. HP’s Envy 7855 the difference is it comes with four process color inks.
A color touch 4.3 inch LCD is set aside the power button which comprises of the entire control panel.

In my testing TR8520 registered 15 pages per minute for printing text documents which are faster than HP7855 and slower than Canon TS9020.
When it comes to output quality especially photos, TR8520 is at its best. Canon five and six ink photo enhanced AIOs is absolutely amazing by producing consistent quality photographs. The text in your documents is well shaped, easy to read and crispy. The large type also looks too good.
Conclusion
I can quote it in one word. A race with many winners and this is the one in the front row. TR8520 with its exquisite features, five ink color programme, excellent photo printing with ADF, it is the prime Editors choice for home office and family use.

Print Speeds
One of the drawbacks perhaps is the slowest ppm rating of 8.8 ppm for monochrome pages and 5 ppm for color pages.
G 4210 is superior in its output quality especially when printing photographs and graphics. Text and graphics quality were impressive, with attractive fonts. And also charts and graphics are coming out with well-delineated hairlines and gradients.
Another feature for G4210 for printing or copying about 200 to 300 pages per month you don’t require to buy ink. Currently, Canon includes enough black ink to print 18,000 black pages and 7000 color pages.
Excellent print quality & low running cost
As already quoted the main outcome of G4210 is the print quality at low running cost and this feature leads G4210 to Editors’ choice for office and home office purpose.

CONNECTIVITY
WF 2760 has got both wired and wireless connectivity. As like the other duplex printers it can connect to a computer either via USB 2.0 or to a LAN via Wi-Fi or Ethernet . You can print from mobile through Wi-Fi Direct or near field communication (NFC). You can print from Epson Print app (for IOS or Android, Epson Scan to Cloud, Epson remote print, Epson creative print, Epson email print, and Google cloud print etc).
SPEED & OUTPUT QUALITY
In my testing, it is found that WF2760 produced 2.5 ppm while printing text and 6.2 ppm when going for business suite. The output quality is good while comparing with its peers with above average photos average text but the graphical quality is bit below par. The printer was found excellent in printing then colored lines and gradients and the text was very fine for the business use. Overall photo quality was also good.
The overall running costs are 6 cents per monochrome page and 17.3 cents per color pages which is the same with Epson 2000 series models like WF 2650 and WF2660.
CONCLUSION
An inexpensive inkjet all in one printer which has good output quality and sold speed. If you are not looking for low running cost and high paper capacity this is not a good option. But it is very much worth in it price for your home and office use.

Canon TS9120 – The Best Wireless Multifunction Printer for Small Office or Home Use
The Canon TS9120 is an all-in-one printer designed for double-sided documents print, scan, the photographic print on photo paper and print on cds. We tested the printer and found to be the most cost effective all in one printer to date.
The TS9120 is a great office printer that also has photo printing. Scan, print and copy very well, is easy to use for office purposes and mobile photo prints and is well connected. It is not a professional photo printer, but it is different than the most demanding.
4 × 6 glossy prints from an iPhone app which were very useful in a just-for-fun printing, and for consumers who want their iPhone-graphics, they come together with the same printer that they use for documents. This printer can also direct print from an SD card or cloud.
In our tests, the scanner is regarded as a professional photographic tool, but not a perfectly usable office tool, the print is better than the scans. The scans can appear slightly grainy, where the photos were not, and black detail is more visible than the scans would demonstrate. Direct Printing without color correction provided results similar to the Photoshop-print, while the color correction more similar to print from My Image Garden, but not so clear, which is a good thing. Of all attempts to the TS9120 to print this image was the direct print with color correction most accurate.
With all this talk about color differences, it is remarkable that the prints are sharp and colors are generally rich and not grainy. In general, this printer is fun and futuristic in use and contains useful modern features.
If you are looking for an office printer and to create decent photo prints with a lot of useful features, this one is a perfect choice.

Canon MX922 – Te Second Best Under $100
Canon PIXMA MX 922 has almost the same quality and speed as the MG 7720 but with added features which makes it the best of our list. First of all, it has an ADF and supports USB memory key. Using the 3-inch touch screen, you can easily navigate through options making all the functions easier to do.

Print quality is as excellent as the MG7720 and it is slightly faster too. You can use this for any business need including PowerPoint handouts.
Overall, Canon PIXMA MX 922 has excellent output quality and user friendliness as Canon PIXMA MG 7720 with extra features at much cheaper price. If Canon PIXMA MG 7720 is rated as “Excellent value for money” by various tech magazines, Canon PIXMA MX 922is the one!

HP LaserJet Pro M277dw – The Best Wireless Laser MFP
The HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M277dw is a highly featured Multifunction Printer (MFP) for color laser printing with very light paper handling. It delivers fast, high-quality text and graphics output, and supports both prints via cloud and WiFi. The M2 77dw adds a duplexer (for two-sided printing) and a manual mode, making it easy to use different paper stocks for different purpose without switching the tray.
The M277dw also offers better paper handling for scanning, with a flatbed and a 50-sheet Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), which can scan legal pages also. It is not as good with photos as the HP M177fw, its predecessor, but for most of the office works, it is not important.
The basic functions of the M277dw include print and scan to a computer plus photocopying and fax. As with most of the new HP MFPs, you can use the HP Webapps if you connect the printer to the network using WiFi or ethernet. Also, you can print directly from Android or iOS.
The M277dw measure 12.7 to 16.5 to 16.4 inches (HWD), which is small enough. It can print at 19 pages per minute (ppm) for both color and black-and-white pages which is pretty good compared to the competitors like Samsung and Brother.
The overall output quality excellent for a color laser MFP especially with documents. Most people would consider them good enough for marketing materials such as pages or convenient brochures.
Photos are a step below the expected level of quality but for business purposes its good enough. If pictures are important for your needs, then consider the HP ENVY Photo 7855, which deliver excellent photo quality. For most of the mini-office or personal use, the M277dw has a clear advantage compared to its predecessor and competitors such as the Samsung C460FW and the BROTHER MFC-9 340CDW.
Ultimately the HP MFP M277dw delivers a combination of faster prints, high-quality output and many MFP functions such as mobile printing, cloud printing etc making it the best in the lot.

Canon PIXMA TS5020 – The Cheapest Wireless All In One Printer
In Canon Series, the least expensive printer is PIXMA series, the PIXMA TS5020 ($49). It is specially designed for home purpose. The major usage is printing photos and documents with low volume and is cheaper than TS8020
Most of the Pixma TS series performs three basic functions, namely print, scan and copy and comes in three different colors, black, white and brown. The same feature is built in TS5020 also. Like the other series models, the control panel is easier to use, but for TS 9020 and TS8020 the output trays can be installed on request only, where the panel is tilted up automatically.
While taking the connectivity part, it consists of WiFi and USB as well as various mobile and cloud connections. It includes features like Airprint, Google Cloud, Print and Mopria, as well as Canon’s own Pixma Cloud Link, Canon Print and Wireless PictBridge for direct printing from specific Canon digital cameras.
In my set up test, it took 20 minutes to unpack and install the ink tanks and software, loading paper and setting up the printing head. The software bundle consists of Canon’s standard photo-centric Pixma drivers and programs including My Image Garden and Quick Menu and Full HD Movie prints for the print frames from video recordings with Canon digital cameras.
Just as different printers that we have tested, the speed of the TS5020 was found to be very low when printing Acrobat, Excel and PowerPoint documents with colors, images, and pictures. The TS5020 performed very well when printing photographs which were at a speed of 19 seconds. It is measured when printing of 4 to 6 inches snapshots.
In addition to the standard three-color inks (cyan, magenta, and yellow), the TS5020 equipped with two black inks, a pigment based and the other dye. The results were great for photos on premium paper prints, which we not only seen in the six inch TS models but also the previous MG series Pixmas (which the TS-Series replacement), like the PIXMA MG5720.
One of the drawbacks of TS5020 is, it is not the best choice for printing of Power Point handouts, but there is no question about photos and document printing.
The Canon PIXMA TS5020 is a low cost all in one wireless inkjet printer suitable for home use with less frequent printing works.

Brother DCPL2520DW – Low Cost High Print Speed
A person who is looking for a budget laser multifunction printer, do not ignore Brother DCPL2520DW. For many, they are the best manufacturer of printer in the world, which offers excellent quality with affordable prices. Brother DCPL25 20DW is one of their newer products. Priced at a reasonable $119, it an excellent choice for any business owners. Mainly used for black and white prints, this is the best choice for a small to medium business where print speed matters.
In addition to the software on your computer, Brother DCPL2520DW can be used with an LCD display on the device. It is nothing special but a mono-display with 2 lines, but it is not necessary to the full function screens on a printer so easy to make.
250 sheets are the paper input capacity. These figures are almost average for a printer in this price range. The largest supported paper size is 8.5 “x 14” (legal). Automatic printing on both sides of the paper is available. Automatic document feeder (ADF) is not there, therefore you must put one paper at the same time when you use the scanner for multiple sheets used.
The dimensions are 16.1 “x 15.7” x 10.5 “(wxdxh), which means that this device is almost as small to fit on your desk. Supported operating systems are Windows XP – 8.1 and Mac OS X 10.7.x and higher. Connections include 802.11b/g/n WiFi and USB 2.0 port. There is no Ethernet RJ-45 port. The Wireless can be used directly with desktops and laptops, but there is also support for iphone, ipad and other mobile devices with AirPrint and Google Cloud Print services.
The indicated print speed for Brother DCPL2520DW is 27 B/W pages per minute. In some cases, these advertised rates are not really true, but checking the user reviews I believe that the 27ppm is very close to the reality. The first page is 8.5 seconds or faster.
Brother DCPL25 20DW is a cheap multifunction printer. It was made for homes or small businesses with a reasonable print volume. The Brother works well for the above mentioned 30 pages per day. There is missing a number of features that true office work horses have such as automatic document feeder and Ethernet connectivity, but such a full-featured printer cost a lot more.
So if you do not plan to buy a very busy printer in the office, and are happy with B/W printing, then this one is an excellent option for you, it has low print cost, rapid speed and wide support for mobile printing.
HP Envy Photo 7855 – The Best All in One Photo Printer
The HP Envy Photo 7855 is a solid choice for an all-in-One home photo printer. A step forward for HP’s Envy-printer line, the 7855 Photo All-in-One Printer ($ 199) has a wide range of connectivity features for a photo-centric MFP. The HP Envy 7855 is a good choice for home users who want to save money on photo printing and are willing to log in to the HP’s Instant Ink-program.
The envy 7855 can print, copy, fax, and scan, and it can print or scan to a USB drive or SD card. The printer supports HP’s ePrint, which allows you to e-mail and attach files as an attachment to a unique address that HP assigns to the printer and the Envy will e-mail and print files, even if you are on the other side of the world.
The connectivity includes USB, 802.11b/g/n wireless and Ethernet, and the printer may also be a direct peer-to-peer connection with a compatible mobile device by HP Wireless direct or via Bluetooth. (You can set the 7855 for wireless printing via Bluetooth connection with the HP Smart-app that is installed on your iOS or Android mobile device.)
The 7855 is the highest model of three recently introduced HP Inkjet All-in-ones. The HP Envy Photo 7100 seems to $ 149, while the HP Envy Photo 6200 All-in-one at $129. The 7855 is only one of the three which has USB port, Ethernet connectivity, ADF, the possibility to fax and support for legal documents.
The Instant Ink Program is a three-tier plan that up to 50 pages per month offers for $ 2.99 per month up to 100 pages per month for $4.99 and up to 300 pages per month for $9.99. These rates even if you were only in color printing. For the high-end plan,6 cent per page, which is still low running cost for the color printing compared to the purchase of the ink without an Instant Ink-subscription and compared to the running cost of other color printers that are listed here.
Output Quality is a mixed bag, with average text and graphics but high quality photo prints. For those who are looking for a decent wireless all in one photo printer with ADF, this one is the best choice.

Canon PIXMA MG 7720
The latest model of Pixma series MG 7720, successor to the well-known MG 7520 is one of the best MFP’s out there with high quality printing and scanning. With key features such as WiFi access point functionality, NFC support, Auto duplex, Mobile printing, CD/DVD print, Easy photo print using 6 ink cartridge, Wireless PictBridge, Airprint and more, the MG 7720 could be the best multi function printer in the market, but it’s not. You will see why.
With WiFi access point, you can connect directly to printer by WiFi even of it is not on network. You can print from memory card but cannot scan to one. Also, there is no support for USB memory key but supports Wireless PictBridge.
The printer as a whole is very user-friendly and features a 3.5-inch touch screen to control. The paper tray capacity is pretty good for most uses. There is a 125 sheet main tray and 20 sheet photo tray.
Canon PIXMA MG 7720 can print on optical disks too. Additionally, the cloud printing and mobile printing are found to be extremely useful these days. The speed is quite good as it can print up to 15 images per minute and it takes approx. 1 minute for a 4 by 6 photo at max resolution. The print quality is also outstanding. You get top quality text and graphics through Canon PIXMA MG 7720.
But even with all these features, the MG 7720 cannot be classified as the best all-in-one. Because it lacks an ADF, fax, USB memory key support and Scan to memory card function. These are minor drawbacks for a small office or home use and the quality and other features outweigh the cons.

Brother MFC J870DW (Discontinued)
Brother MFC J870DW would be a smart choice for any home or small business. The cheap Multifunction printer is jampacked with features like NFC, PictBridge Print, USB Memory Key support, WiFi, ADF, Auto Duplex etc.
Basically, it can print, scan, copy and fax plus it can work as a standalone copier and fax machine too. You can use the machine quite easily with the 2.7-inch touch screen. The 100 sheets main ADF tray and 20 sheet photo tray is a good addition at this price. With ADF and auto duplexer, you can get your printing jobs done in seconds. The letter sized flatbed can scan large docs too.
The main advantages of MFC J870DW over HP Envy 5660 are ADF, Ethernet, USB memory key and PictBridge. You can print directly from Pictbridge camera or memory cards. Also, you can print from websites like Picassa web albums, Facebook, Flickr, and other cloud services. The ability to print on optical discs and copy an image on to another disc is an added advantage.
As for the performance, MFC J870DW appeared to be faster than Envy 5660. It could print 30 pages per minute (black and white) and took 1 minute to print a 4 by 6 photo. The quality is quite good for almost every home or small office purposes but can’t be used for professional photo printing or scanning. The texts are clear though.
Overall, this one can be used for any small office or home without breaking the bank and is definitely better than HP Envy 5660.
HP Envy 5660
HP Envy 5660 is a cheap all-in-one printer most suitable for home use with more than enough features for the price. Print to cloud, print from memory card, printing from phones and tablets, printing directly from websites without a computer etc gets easier on Envy 5660.
The device features a 2.6 inch LCD screen to preview before printing. You can print, copy or scan with this but there is no fax facility. The main thing about Envy 5660 is its very user-friendly. Anybody can do all the functions without detailed learning. The device set up is quite easy. Connect the printer; install all the drivers and you are ready to go. You can even check for automatic updates of drivers while installing for the first time.
HP Envy 5660 is a compact all-in-one measuring 6.3 x 17.9 x 16.1 inches and weighing 15 pounds. It comes with USB and Wi-Fi connectivity but lacks Ethernet. The 125-sheet input tray for documents and 15-sheet tray for 4 by 6 photos are sufficient for home use. The automatic duplexer which prints 2 sides at once does the job very well and can save a lot of time as well.
But the main drawback I noticed is that it does not come with an Automatic Document Feeder. ADF can surely save a lot of time and effort. Also, it lacks USB memory key print and PictBridge camera print.
I think there is no need for a speed comparison because it lacks an ADF. As for the print quality, I can rate only average but is acceptable for most home use. It couldn’t read small fonts while scanning. The scan quality is also average but good for the price.
Overall, the HP Envy 5660 is a cheap light duty MFP for home use. It has nothing other than price to envy about.

Canon ImageClass MF229DW
Do you want a monochrome laser printer that does half the office works? Take a look at MF229DW. With easy-to-use touch screen, ADF and auto duplex mechanism, Canon ImageClass MF229DW will be perfect for small to medium offices.
It can print from PC, scan to PC ad also work as standalone copier and fax machine. It also supports mobile printing and scanning through WiFi direct. The whole machine is small enough to fit on a desk but not as small as HP Envy 5660 or Brother MFC J870DW. Well, that’s because this is a medium-duty monochrome laser printer.
The MF229DW has a 250 sheet tray with no upgrade options. So you can’t improve the tray capacity later on. The 50 sheet ADF with duplexer would be enough for most businesses.
Performance-wise, the 229DW is excellent in its class. Canon rates 16 ppm for duplex and 28 ppm for simplex operation and is almost as close when I used it too. The quality of the print is excellent and the texts are crystal clear.
Those who need a monochrome laser printer at low price can definitely give this one a try. Canon launched new model (Canon imageCLASS MF249dw) this year which is cheaper than MF229DW and deliver top class performance.

Brother MFC-J680DW
The most popular feature of this product is it supports NFC, the technology that enables wireless two way communication between two devices. However if you have a phone or a tablet that has no NFC support the event cannot be used.
Under the category of connection the MFC J650DW offers Wi-Fi, so you can connect to a network, but only through wireless connections. It also offers a number of mobile print functions (more on that later), so you can print from mobile devices. It does not however offer Wi-Fi Direct, what means that if you set device via a USB cable connects to your computer instead of on Wi-Fi to connect your network, you cannot print options of the mobile user.
The MFP functions of the MFC J650DW include printing and faxing, together with a scan to PC, and also work as a self-employed person copy machine and fax machines. The 2.7-inch touchscreen-based front panel menu helps make it easy to view jobs for the copy and fax; for scanning and sending a file as an e-mail attachment using the e-mail program on your PC; and more.
If the printer is connected to your network and your network is connected to the web, you can also use the menus to connect to a range of websites. Some, including Picasa Web Albums, is mainly of interest for home use. Others, including Google Drive, Evernote, Box, Dropbox, and, to a lesser extent, Flickr and Facebook, are more office addressed.
With photo-centric features, you can print directly from any PictBridge-cameras, memory cards and USB memory keys, as well as view photos before you on the LCD screen of the front panel to print. You can also scan directly to memory cards and USB keys.
Paper handling is best described as limited but suitable. The most important limitation is that the paper tray only contains100 sheets, without upgrade options. That should be sufficient for the most personal use, but if you have the printer on a network share, you will probably find that the reload of the tray a chore.
Another important feature is that you can easily switch on between plain paper and photo paper with a 20 sheet paper tray for 4-on-6 photo paper. Another nice touch is automatic duplex (for printing on both sides of a page). Paper Handling choices for scanning include a font size flatbed and an automatic document feeder with 20 sheets (ADF) that are suitable for paper with a legal size.
The speed quality output and set up of MFC J650DW is absolutely standard. For my tests, I used a system which is running Windows Vista and connected to a USB cable. The pages per minute are 4 to 9 for MFC J870DW and 4 to 7 pages per minute for MFC J650DW which is not a big difference.
Output quality for the MFC J650DW is almost average across the board. The text is a match for the most inkjet MFPS, making it is good enough for most business needs. Graphical output is in the low end of a very tight range where the vast majority of the ink cartridge mfps scores, making it easy enough for most business use. Depending on how much of a perfectionist you are, you can find it may not be good for PowerPoint handouts. Photos were dead on par for an inkjet MFP, what translates to a match for what you would expect from a drugstore print.
The Brother MFC J650DW is in principle the Brother MFC J8 70DW with a number of cut corners. If you have any of the features needed, leaves the NFC-support, Ethernet, Wi-Fi Direct or on optical discs. There is no good reason not to pay more and the brother MFC J8 70DW. If none of these extras need, then the Brother MFC J650DW you save a bit of money. And if you are a business-oriented inkjet MFP need for light print volumes, it can be a good fit.
