Important: In recent years the graphics card market is experiencing a time of significant shortages and price increases, given the high demand for these components for bitcoin mining. Therefore, although we try to keep this section as up-to-date as possible, it is likely that the graphs we link are at a given moment out of stock, or at a higher price than they had at the time of including them in this guide. The prices of the configurations, therefore, should only be taken as mere guidance. Make sure you check your final price before making your purchase.
Also, note that only the main components are included in the configurations. No peripherals, no DVD players or operating system are included since you can easily use the ones you had on your previous computer.
Custom Gaming PC for $400
This is our most basic gaming PC, focused on those looking for a “for everything” system without the need to excel in any specific aspect. Despite its low cost, not only will it serve you for the simplest tasks (surfing the Internet, listening to music streaming or from your hard drive, watching movies and series, working with documents …), but you can also edit photos and videos in a casual way and, of course, play games.
Now, can you use it for the current generation of games? The answer is yes, no doubt, as long as you are not very demanding with the graphics quality and you agree with a resolution of 720p.
Most titles can run without problems with an average 720p quality and still maintain a decent framerate, especially if you plan to use it with older games.
But this system is most suitable for the e-Sports: Dota 2, League of Legends, Rocket League …
The secret to getting such a system at a minimum price is the combination of the Intel Pentium G4400 processor, which despite not being a purely gaming model and having only two cores offers unbeatable value for money, and a Nvidia GT 1030 graphics, focused precisely on those types of players that we talked about before: e-Sports fans or users with a modest HD monitor.
Since it is our smallest budget to mount a cheap gaming PC, we had to make some sacrifices, which you can avoid if you have a somewhat looser budget. For example, the hard drive is 500GB, when the standard nowadays is 1TB (still you will have enough space for an average amount of files and games). We have also cut something in the power supply, choosing a very basic model (if you want to provide more stability to your computer here you have the best power supplies).
Custom Gaming PC for $600
With 600 dollars we can build a PC that exceeds the current generation of consoles, and for this, we have opted for an Intel Pentium G4560 accompanied by a Radeon RX 560 4GB graphics card.
In this range of budget, we could also consider buying an Intel Core i3-7100, but the performance of this Pentium and its low price make it a bargain impossible to miss: 3.5 GHz speed, Hyper-Threading technology to get a total of 4 threads, ability to overclock and so on.
There is also the option of going for a Ryzen 3 1200, which thanks to its four cores would perform better than the Pentium in multitasking environments and in demanding processes of image editing and rendering. However, we prefer to invest the difference in a better graphics card.
For its part, the Radeon RX5 60 seems a very good option in terms of quality-price, and despite being a low-end card, it is up to the latest killer games on the market with high quality, although you may have to download it a little or disable anti-aliasing if you want to keep around 60 fps stable.
This budget of PC gaming also has the advantage that it does not need a power source too powerful, so with a 450w we are well served. To avoid having space problems, we have looked for a motherboard and an ATX format box that, despite being inexpensive, come with everything we need for a configuration of these characteristics.
Custom Gaming PC for $1000
If you can afford to spend around 800-1000 dollars on your gaming PC, you’re in luck. And is that around this budget is where a carefully configured system reaches its sweet spot, reaching the balance between a moderate economic expenditure and a great performance when enjoying the latest games without giving up good graphics.
This PC of unbeatable quality-price mounts an AMD Ryzen 1400 , that is to say, one of the last CPU of AMD, able to do against the i5 with its four cores and 8 threads, its base frequency of 3.2 GHz and its capacity to make overclock with any cheap AM4 motherboard and the fan that comes as standard.
However, while it is true that the i5 show greater performance in individual operation per core, and that in most games offer some more FPS, this Ryzen 1400 is more affordable and benefits from its great multicore potential to work in several tasks at the same time, or perform activities such as video editing or graphic design.
Together with the GTX 1050 Ti 4 GB, this configuration will allow you to play smoothly any game on 1920 × 1080 monitors. Of course, if you find a GTX 1060 (even the 3GB version) or an RX 570 at a reasonable price, it will be a good upgrade.
Although it is not the best gaming PC (it is a somewhat reduced budget), we do have many possibilities for improvement, something that is essential in the best PCs so that they do not get outdated after a short time. Specifically, we can acquire a more powerful card in the future, such as the GTX 1080 or the GTX 1070, without the processor falling short.
Custom Gaming PC for $1250
To this configuration, of around $1250 budget, we can consider it as a medium-high range gaming PC. With this system we make sure we do not have to improve any aspect for several years, possibly until the next generation of games arrives, so we will have plenty of time to pay it off.
We thought it would be convenient to continue with the bases of our previous configuration, of 1000 dollars, and to continue betting on the Ryzen line of AMD. However, this time the chosen CPU is the Ryzen 5 1500x, instead of 1400, since it will give us an extra power to our configuration.
In addition, in the graphics aspect, we have incorporated the Nvidia GTX 1060 of 6 GB, which we have been lucky enough to find at a relatively good price. However, the volatility in both stocks and prices in this segment of graphics cards is very high at this time, so if your price soars, you may prefer the 3GB version instead.
With these elements, we can play as we please and the highest graphic quality in 1920 × 1080 (Full HD). When we say what we like, we also include the latest titles and those that are to come during a good time.
But not only that, but this combo is also able to take advantage of many games on monitors 2560 × 1440, and if we want to enter the field of 4k, we can also do it, although at a low quality and at the cost of losing enough FPS
As a novelty with respect to the previous PC configurations, we have included a 256 GB SSD hard disk of the PCIe NVMe type, far superior to traditional SSDs. While it is true that the gaming experience will not improve with this memory, when installing the operating system and certain programs in it we will notice a higher start and load speeds, significantly increasing the overall quality of our equipment.
Custom Gaming PC for $1500
This gaming PC configuration is aimed at advanced and enthusiastic players, and who intend to play at minimum resolutions of 1440p. If you do not feel identified with this description, it is better you look for a more affordable configuration, since, otherwise, this computer may be huge investment.
As for the chosen components, we have worked a small miracle, since with a budget nothing excessive we have achieved a PC suitable for overclocking, with an AMD Ryzen 5 1600 and a GTX 1070 graphics. Of course, with the situation of instability that is going through the graphics cards, it is possible that soon this card goes up in price or runs out of stock for a while, so you can search for any other brand or model.
As we said, we opted for the Ryzen 5 1600, one of the best gaming processors. It has a base frequency of 3.2 GHz, and turbo 3.6 GHz. Initially, it does not seem very surprising but that impression changes to the knowledge that it has six cores and twelve threads and a good potential for overclocking even with the fan that comes standard.
There will be those who consider a better option to go for a Ryzen 7 or an Intel 7, but we believe that this Ryzen 5 1600 is the smartest option for this budget, because if we choose a more expensive processor, we will have to sacrifice that extra amount on the graphics card.
In this way, we can accompany it with a GTX 1070, one of the best graphics cards in the market. For resolutions of up to 1440p, it will give you everything you need, being one of the best gaming graphics card. It is also a good gateway to enjoy the 4K experience.
And if that were not enough, thanks to the extra cores of this Ryzen, it is also a fully capable computer for other tasks besides gaming, such as video editing, graphic design, streaming …
Custom Gaming PC for $2000
With a budget of around 2000 dollars, we have many variants at our disposal to build the best gaming PC. You can incorporate the top-end products in each category so that any gaming PC you build will be enough for high-end gaming. However, what is most important is that such a system must mount a Geforce GTX 1080, since with it you will be able to play the most demanding titles at the highest quality without blinking, and also at high resolutions.
However, keep an eye on prices, as we discussed at the beginning of this article, at this time the graphics card market is highly unstable and it is very difficult to find models in stock and at reasonable prices.
Of course, if you are willing to make this payment for your gaming computer, we recommend that you get a high-performance monitor, with a resolution of at least 2560 × 1440. Otherwise, you will not be able to take full advantage of the graphics quality that this monster is capable of offering, and you will be wasting your money.
We have opted for the i5-8600k as a processor on any i7 or Ryzen 7, considering that gaming is going to be the main task for which you will use the equipment and that you will play at high resolutions.
If instead, you want this equipment as a PC for video editing or for graphic design at a professional or semi-professional level, it is a good idea to choose one of those more powerful processors, even if you have to settle for a GTX 1070 or even a GTX 1060 as a graphics card.
If you wish you can get a pack of 8 Gb RAM since when playing the difference with respect to the 16 Gb will be minimal. But we believe that with 16 Gb you will have a more balanced set, and this way you will be assured of a capacity that you may need in the future.
So these are our bundle of configurations to build the best gaming computer, adapted to the budgets and needs of each.
We will update this section often to have the latest components of the moment, so do not miss visiting from time to time to see if you can improve something in the gaming PC that you have in mind.
